Did you know your residual waste largely consists of food scraps? In Eindhoven, we're starting a new trial to change this. Residents of a flat or high-rise apartment can also separate their food scraps from now on! By separating food scraps, we can make waste into a resource. We'll process it, for example, into compost and green gas. We can use this to not only feed plants, but also warm our houses.

Why are we doing this trial?
Municipalities have been tasked by the government and European Union with separating food scraps. Eindhoven aims to separate in flats and high-rise apartments. With this trial, we're taking an important step in establishing this for the entire municipality.
This trial will run from November 1st, 2024, to May 1st, 2025.
How will it work?
Free container and bags: You will receive a useful, closeable container and special bags for collecting food scraps. You can order new bags for free in our online store.
Mini container: You'll place the bag of food scraps in a mini container (green wheelie bin) which will be placed in a common area.
Weekly collection: The mini container will be exchanged for an empty one every week.
Processing: The food scraps are turned into green gas and compost.
Information: You'll receive weekly updates about the amount of collected food scraps. The recycling coaches will answer all your questions.

Have you signed in? Our recycling coaches will bring you a container with bags in the week of 21 or 28 October. If you sign in after these dates, our recycling coach will visit you later.
The waste journey
The food scrap's journey doesn't end at collection. We'll deliver them to a processing plant. Here, the scraps are fermented into green gas and then composted.
This results in high-quality compost, which will later be available in garden centers and supermarkets. This closes the circle of sustainability.
This trial is a step for Eindhoven in creating a circular economy and a livable city for all of us. Let's be the change we want to see in the world.
